In October of 2001 I started taking lessons in Bavarian folk art painting or Bauernmalerei.

Bauernmalerei (pronounced bow-urn-maler-rye) is folk art associated with Germany, Austria and Switzerland, although many other European nations have similar painting styles. The term comes from two words: "bauern" which means peasant or farmer and "malerei" which means painting. It is mostly found in Bavaria hence the reference to it as "Bavarian Folk Art" in the US.   It is traditionally painted on funiture and many regional styles developed.  It is characterised by stroke work using a round brush to paint scrolls and flowers.
